1. Literary Review
1.1 Research Background
Beloved is Morrisonrsquo;s fifth work from which she turns to the history of black people. She explores the painful history in Beloved that people do not want to mention. And she wrote “sixty million and more” on the title page of Beloved which aims not only to comfort the dead black slaves but also to help modern readers to understand the destruction of the black people who live under slavery.
Generally speaking, the researches on Morrison mainly focused on her identity as an African-American female writer. The discussions which surrounded this topic basically included ethnic, gender, cultural, and literary traditions. Until the early Twenty-first century, the study on space of Morrisonrsquo;s novels began since the “spatial turn” occurred in the academia in the end of the Twentieth century. Many spatial critics are deeply influenced by Henri Lefebvre and Michel Foucault who are two important scholars of spatial criticism. As a result, a new angle to study Beloved came into being. Many scholars were interested in using the space theory and generally speaking they tended to study a specific space in the novel such as home, kitchen, closet, etc.
